Frank, Dom and Mark Romeo
by / di VERONICA MASTROIANNI A love of family and cars is at the heart of Dom Romeo’s success and longevity in Ontario’s automobile business. The dedicated car enthusiast has been in the industry for 67 years and is regarded as a pioneer who paved the way for other Italian-Canadian owned car dealerships. At 87, he is still a staple at Pine View Hyundai, which he owns and runs alongside his son, Frank. Dom says he developed a passion for cars when he was a teenager and got a part-time job working at his brother-in-law’s car repair shop. “Like most young people, I had a great fascination for automobiles,” he recalls. “After I graduated high school, I went to work for a General Motors dealer and was there for 21 years, starting back in 1949.” Dom was just five-years-old when he and his family immigrated to Canada in 1935 from the town of Trenta in Cosenza, Calabria. He grew up with the values of sacrifice, patience and hard work. He worked tirelessly, learned about the business and always kept his ultimate goal in mind: owning his own car dealership. He attained that goal in 1970 when he acquired a General Motors franchise and began operating the dealership, then known as Pine View Pontiac Buick Sales Ltd. “I’ve always dreamt of having my own business, as most people do, so it was truly exciting for me once I was able to do that.” As the business grew, it became a family affair. Dom’s son, Frank, is an integral part of the business as he helped build the company to where it stands today. In 2001, he became acting president, and in 2010, he purchased the current Hyundai dealership and took over the operations. Frank’s drive for success was always inspired by his father’s strong work ethic. “As a young boy, I always looked up at my father with great respect, therefore, coming into the car business was an easy decision for me to make. Ever since I was in high school all I wanted to do was work with cars, and looking at my father – and at the examples he set for me – allowed for that to happen. This is something that as I got older in life, I started to value and appreciate more because it led me to where I am today.” And today Frank Romeo is carrying on the family tradition of success in Ontario’s car dealership industry. Along with Pine View Hyundai, he also owns Airport Nissan – a dealership that he manages with his youngest brother, Mark.
Alla base del successo e della longevità di Dom Romeo nel settore automobilistico in Ontario ci sono l’amore per la famiglia e per le macchine. Questo zelante appassionato di auto opera nel settore da 67 anni, ed è considerato un pioniere che ha aperto la strada ad altre concessionarie d’auto di proprietà di italocanadesi. A 87 anni, è ancora un riferimento alla Pine View Hyundai, che possiede e gestisce assieme al figlio, Frank. Dom dice di aver maturato la passione per le auto da adolescente, quando ha ottenuto un lavoro part-time nell’officina meccanica di suo cognato. “Come la maggioranza dei giovani, ero molto affascinato dalle automobili,” ricorda. “Dopo essermi diplomato alle scuole superiori sono andato a lavorare per un rivenditore della General Motors e ci sono rimasto per 21 anni, a partire dal 1949.” Dom aveva appena cinque anni quando nel 1935, con la sua famiglia, è immigrato in Canada dal paesino di Trenta, Cosenza, in Calabria. È cresciuto con i valori del sacrificio, della pazienza e del lavoro duro. Ha lavorato instancabilmente, ha imparato a conoscere il settore e ha sempre tenuto bene a mente il suo obiettivo principale: possedere una sua concessionaria d’auto. Ha raggiunto quell’obiettivo nel 1970 quando ha acquisito un franchising della General Motors ed ha cominciato a gestire la concessionaria, allora nota come Pine View Pontiac Buick Sales Ltd. “Ho sempre sognato di possedere una ditta tutta mia, come molti, per cui è stato davvero elettrizzante quando alla fine ci sono riuscito.” Man mano che l’azienda cresceva, è diventata un affare di famiglia. Il figlio di Dom, Frank, è parte integrante della compagnia, in quanto ha contribuito a farla crescere fino al punto in cui si trova oggi. Nel 2001 è diventato presidente ad interim e nel 2010 ha acquistato l’attuale concessionaria Hyundai ed è subentrato nella direzione. L’ambizione di Frank per il successo gli è sempre stata ispirata dalla profonda etica del lavoro del padre. “Da ragazzo guardavo mio padre con grande rispetto, pertanto è stato facile per me scegliere di entrare nel settore automobilistico. Sin dai tempi delle scuole superiori tutto quello che ho sempre desiderato era lavorare con le macchine, ed osservare mio padre – e gli esempi che mi offriva – ha fatto sì che ciò accadesse. È qualcosa che crescendo ho cominciato a stimare ed apprezzare maggiormente perché mi ha portato dove mi trovo oggi.” Ed oggi Frank Romeo porta avanti la tradizione di successo della famiglia nel settore delle concessionarie d’auto in Ontario. Assieme alla Pine View Hyundai, è anche titolare della Airport Nissan – una concessionaria che gestisce assieme al fratello minore, Mark.
